National Night Out
National Night Out is an extraordinary way to build neighborhood unity and strengthen police-community partnerships. During the first Tuesday in August from 5 PM to 9 PM., neighbors throughout Pacifica are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “National Night Out” crime prevention event. We invite our residents and businesses to turn on their porch lights and get to know their neighbors.
National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Pacifica Police Department, involves over 16,124 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases around the world. Annually, approximately one million people participate in National Night Out, supported in part by the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten awareness for crime prevention
- Generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and community-police relations
- Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
You don’t have to be an official Neighborhood Watch group to participate in National Night Out. You may be a couple of neighbors who merely want to get to know each other better and promote safety in your neighborhood. This is a great way to start and begin an annual tradition in your neighborhood.
