Every year, auto accidents cause approximately 40,000 deaths in the United States. Accidents also cause twice as many injuries and billions of dollars in medical and repair costs. Drivers can do a great deal to prevent accidents by adhering to the following:
- Buckle Up – Studies show that people who wear seat belts are less likely to be involved/injured in an accident
- Slow Down – Excessive speed is the number one collision factor in accidents throughout the country
- Pay Attention – A distracted driver is almost as dangerous as a drunk driver – cell phones and other distracting devices should be only used in emergencies while driving
- Drive Defensively – The best driver in the world can still be hit by the drunk or distracted driver – pay attention to surroundings, stay out of other drivers’ blind spots, stay away from obviously impaired or distracted drivers, consistently keep a 360-degree surveillance of the roadway and anticipate danger
Inclement weather, such as rain or fog, increases road hazards. Following are some simple safety tips:
- Vehicle Maintenance – Make sure that windshield wipers are in good condition (they should be changed every year) and make sure that headlights, taillights, brake lights and defrosters also are in good working order
- Slow Down & Provide Extra Room – Stopping distances can almost double when the roadway is wet – slow down sooner that normal and provide a greater cushion of distance between vehicles
