There are many reasons why a person may be deemed medically unfit to drive in the State of California. Here is a partial list:

  • Unexplained loss of consciousness
  • Seizure disorders
  • Loss of motor skills affecting driving ability
  • Other related illnesses and chronic diseases
  • Diseases of the eyes

A person can be required to be reexamined by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) based on a report submitted by any doctor, judge or police officer. Individuals who ignore a notice to reexamine or fail a reexamination will have their driving privilege suspended or revoked.

A common concern centers on aging relatives, whose driving abilities are deteriorating based on mental or physical limitations. This not only presents a logistical problem for families, but also creates public safety issues. If you believe a family member may no longer safely drive, you can write a letter to the DMV explaining your concerns (include the family member’s driver information).

More details about this process can be found at the California Department of Motor Vehicles website.
