The Mid-Block Crosswalk Safety Improvement Project created and/or improved nine crosswalks located around the City of Pacifica in the vicinity of four schools: Ingrid B Lacy Middle School, Ortega Elementary School, Vallemar Elementary School, and Terra Nova High School. Improvements included high visibility striping and signage, and painted bulbouts with delineators at crosswalk locations to reduce crossing distance, enhance visibility and reduce traffic speeds. Five of the nine crosswalks received flashing, solar-powered, push-button activated rectangular rapid flashing beacons to enhance pedestrian safety.

Construction of the project began in May 2024 and was completed in July 2024 and accepted by the City Council in August 2024.

The project was part of the City’s 2020 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan and Safe Routes To School Plan. Project funding was provided by the City/County Association of Governments (C/CAG) of San Mateo County through Measure M, approved by San Mateo County voters in 2010, and by the San Mateo County Office of Education Safe Routes to School grant program.
